Focus Over Features. Every Time.

Every feature request is a compliment. Someone liked the tool enough to want more from it. That is nice. The answer is still usually no.

Adding features to a focused tool is how you get an unfocused tool. The focus is the product. Break it and you have something that does many things adequately. That is not a tool. That is a settings menu.

One question: does this help the tool do its core job better, or does it add a new job?

Better — maybe. New job — no.

A word counter that gets faster is better. A word counter that also formats text has two jobs now. Ship a separate formatter.

WHAT FOCUS ACTUALLY COSTS

Users who want the missing feature go elsewhere. That is fine. The users who stay are the ones who wanted exactly what you built. That group is smaller and more loyal than a bloated user base who half-uses twenty features.

A sharp tool for a specific job beats a blunt tool for every job. Build sharp.
